Bright white light seen on Karori Hill/Makara Peak

For about half an hour from 7.30pm to just after 8pm we saw a really bright white light which seemed to be hovering on the Karori hillside. After a while several smaller white lights seemed to come out from or behind the big one. One of them whizzed at lightning speed across the hillside to the left and hovered for about a minute then disappeared. Apparently, it was above the bike trail and you do get riders with their lights on going up and down. It didn't make sense that when a smartphone was turned on, it immediately crashed, so we could not get a picture. The light was hovering opposite our house and could be seen clearly from the balcony.
