Lights flying in v, changing color and direction

Three lights flying north to south across the sky, looked like planes but is odd for planes to fly together in a v going same direction and same speed so kept watching. It was almost like they knew I noticed they were strange and the lights started to separate, the v became larger and two of the lights started to blink and then faded. The one leading turned red but continued at the same speed in the same direction. I saw the other two flicker on and off erratically, now the lights were in a line but more spread out. The white lights disappeared completely, then all of a sudden the red light changed direction, flew backwards in an arc and then straight down insanely fast until it disappeared.
