Lights over Lake Ontario. Moved in odd pattern

A friend and I were sitting on a rock right by the lake (Lake Ontario) from around 11pm until 12:30am. It was a very clear night so it was very clear to see the stars as we were sitting in the dark.

We first noticed a small light towards the south of the lake. Naturally, I thought it was a plane as they sometimes come from the same direction towards the north to Pearson airport so we didn't pay much attention. However, after a few minutes we noticed that the light was not really coming towards us anymore, but instead it had stopped and was shining a white light straight down to the water. The reflection was as bright as when the moon reflects over the water. That is when the light caught our attention.

We started noticing the light started to move towards the east and then the light it was shining down was immediately turned off. The light got brighter and brighter and then started to move in very weird patterns. At this point, we knew there was no way a plane could fly at that speed / pattern.

The light kept zig-zaging, then it hovered, then it would go up, down, backwards, and then continued its trajectory towards the east for about 5 minutes until it vanished.

In the 1.5 hours that we sat there, we saw 5 or 6 of the same lights moving in extremely weird patterns (pretty similar but not identical). We did not know if the same light had returned or if it was a different object.

At that point, my friend pulled out an instagram video that her friend had posted the night before...to out surprise, it looked identical to what we were seeing last night.

I took a video of it as well, but it is really hard to tell how it was moving as it was very dark and there are no other points of reference. I have never seen anything like this...
