Satellite looking object took 90 degree turn

Satellite traveling due North made a sharp turn due East sped up an vanished. My wife and I were having a back yard campfire and enjoying a pleasant October night . Watching a small plane fly over I spotted a satellite heading North and pointed it out to my wife. She said it could be the space station that we have seen many nights. We watched its steady path for about 30 seconds then it abruptly turned East, sped up and within a few seconds vanished. We both looked at each other and said what was that? This object was obviously lit by the sun and I understand traveling East it would disappear but it took a sharp 90 degree turn in orbit? That is something I have never seen before. I am 58 years old and not a kook. I have never reported a UFO before.
