I was literally 200 metres from arriving home in my car when i noticed a bright orange or amber light in the sky, i thought at first it to be an airliner on their usual flightpath across canterbury heading in a East North Easterly direction from any of the London airports. I was outside my home within a minute and i got out my vehicle quickly to observe it more carefully. My first instinct was to listen for engines and look closely for flashing anti collision beacons, but could not did not witness any of the two.
I can only describe its illumination as a light shining directly towards me, very very bright, too bright for a satellite. I have been observing satellites for the last 30 years and it was definately not. Its movement was proof of this.
It seemed to remain in the immediate area of the star Vega, moving slowly and slightly, i would say in a now North Westerly direction but only for a second or so. I ran into my house to get my camcorder but when i tried to film, there just was not enough brightness around for the camcorder to focus on or pick up any light on the screen.
At this moment the glow slowly faded, thats the only way i could describe it. It did not totally disappear though. It was a slow gradual fade, i would say 3 to 4 seconds, just like when a satellite is spinning and it sometimes fades then glows again.
I then ran back into my house and grabbed my mobile phone to ring my brother, just to check on whether there was the slightest chance he may be able to witness the same object. I thought doing this would atleast give me an indication of its altitude if he could see the same thing. Unfortunately his location was too cloudy.
As i ran back out the house with my phone, and this is no more than 5/6 it was literally approx 15 to 20 degrees of the horizon to the South West heading at speed at i would say to the 4 oclock position. It then faded away slowly like a meteor does after it has entered our atmosphere, just above the horizon. it was not travelling at the speed of a meteorite though.
Its glow was unusual, like a light shinning directly in my direction, however it was not a perfect sharp light. I find it very hard to describe.
